Wonders

There are many lists of "Wonders of the World". Sometimes they're qualified as "Ancient Wonders", sometimes "Modern Wonders". Some sites make "all" the lists, some not. Here's our list -- at least of the places one or both of us have visited.

Name Location Why's it a wonder?
Borobudur Java Indonesia Huge, old, Hindu, Buddhist. Stone. 2nd visit 2010.
Angkor Wat Siem Reap, Cambodia Huge, old, Hindu, Buddhist. Stone. The Khemmer Rouge managed to not destroy it. Angkor is just one of many (hundreds) of temples in that part of Cambodia. They're still finding them.
Taj Mahal Agra, India  Tribute to love (it's a tomb). An astonishing building in a dumpy town.
Great Wall of China Badaling, China Keep out Mongol hordes? Nice try (but they're too clever). The Great Wall is amazing due to its scale -- but being inundated with shops and KFC stores (no joke) is disappointing.
Pyramids of Egypt  Egypt  The pyramids, Sphinx, temples at Luxor and other sites along the Nile are like nothing else in the world. Don't go in the summer and don't drink the water.
Panama Canal Panama  An Engineering feat, with an interesting political history 3-times through.
Easter Island Posession of Chile Ancient stone moai dot the landscape. We know where they were made -- but how were they transported? What really happened to the culture?

US National Parks & Monuments

Name Location Features
Arches   Um, arches? Sandstone formations with holes. Donuts in geographic time
Canyonland
Bryce Canyon
Zion
Carlsbad Canyon
Saguaro
Capital Reef   Petroglyphs
Grand Canyon AZ (North Rim)
