Africa

Mostly the ends.

Scott's been to South Africa on business several times: Johannesburg ("Jo'burg"), Capetown, Durban, Manchester & Port Elizabeth. Once he took a connection through Paris and spent the day wandering there, it extended the overall travel time to about 40 hours, and when he arrived he was almost immediately spirited off to a customer dinner. "Memorable".

Johannesburg is big and a bit scary (crime) -- but it's where Scott's Reseller was based. Capetown is lovely and we'd like to get back there. The "big game" parks will probably bring us back to the area for a safari.

In early 2009, we embarked on a 3 month cruise which brought us to most of the cities in South Africa, and other countries along the west coast. Check that trip out here.

At the top of Africa, we've both been to Morocco and Egypt -- and Scott's been to Cairo several times on business.

Egypt South Africa Morocco Middle East

We are not well travelled in Africa. We've both been to Egypt, Scott's been to South Africa a few times on business. The top, the bottom. We have to work on the middle bits.

Egypt

Egypt is ancient, fascinating, dirty, poor, hot and dry. We visited together in the late Spring of 1990, well before the era of digital cameras (so for us to provide photos, we'll have to scan from our prints). We enjoyed Egypt (which consisted of a day or two in Cairo, and a cruise up the Nile, where we both got sick from food poisioning) and we'd like to go back sometimes, although the "bad guys" seem to be hell-bent on destroying the tourist infrastructure with acts of terrorism. We suspect it's pretty safe due to enhanced security levels, but there are plenty of other places to visit, re-visit too.

Morocco

A one day visit off the cruise ship Renaissance 5 brought us to Casablanca back in 2001. We liked it, even though we got "scammed" by our taxi driver throughout the day (hey, it's a living. We'd visit Morocco again.

South Africa

Another country with a lot of promise, that's potentially dangerous. We wouldn't hesitate to visit the game parks, or the city of Cape Town (which is surrounded by lovely Table Mountain) -- but we'd give Johannesburg a miss. Again, no photographs handy.
